Clever Kids Early Learning Centre
The clients approached DJA to design the additions and alterations to an existing house in Wainuiomata to establish a new early learning centre for 40 children.
Alterations are proposed to accommodate the under two’s in the existing house, with the space between the buildings developed as the outdoor play space for all ages with native planting, and turfed recycled play matting for moveable play equipment. Rainwater tanks are to be incorporated for water play and flushing toilets. The selection of the materials and finishes was based on principles of sustainability.
The new building is located and oriented for optimal daylighting and energy efficiency. The deep volume of the Creative space is overlit with high-level windows. The Quiet space for quieter activity is located away from the main play area with bay window seats for focused views into vegetation. The enclosed deck which includes the sandpit, acts as a transition space between the outdoor play space and the indoor creative activity space with the toilets accessed directly off the deck and the creative activity space.
