House in the Trees

This low energy home sits on the top of a suburban hillside amongst the trees.

It has been stepped over three levels to make the most of the available sun and views. Strategically placed skylights and an open void bring light deep into the centre of the house.

The house incorporates high levels of insulation and is designed for passive solar gains, particularly in winter. Being built over three levels has created some challenges in designing an efficient heat recovery and air movement system so we will monitor the energy and temperatures in the home over the next year to test that it performs to expectations.

A feature stair with saligna treads rises three levels through the house and forms the core circulation route. Square wall cutouts and windows provide mini views between internal spaces and to the trees beyond.
